An 80-year-old cyclist has died after being hit by a car in North Long Beach, according to police.
Long Beach police say the cyclist, identified as Long Beach resident Enrique Barajas, 80, was riding his bicycle northbound on Atlantic Avenue near Pleasant Street around noon on Monday, Jan. 20.
Barajas was merging from the bike lane into the number one lane on Atlantic Avenue when the driver of a white SUV, also going northbound in the number two lane, sideswiped him, police said.
Long Beach Fire Department personnel took Barajas to a local hospital in critical condition, according to the LBPD, which said they were notified Tuesday that he died from his injuries.
It's unclear who the driver of the SUV was or whether they knew they hit Barajas. Police say the driver failed to stop after the crash and continued driving northbound.
The LBPD asks that anyone who witnessed the crash contact detectives at 562-570-7355.
