Cabrillo student dies during soccer game, LBUSD says
The soccer program is holding a vigil for the 9th-grade student on the school's soccer field Saturday at 9 a.m.
A 9th grade student at Cabrillo High School died after suffering a "medical emergency" during a soccer game, Long Beach Unified School District announced Friday night on X.
The nature of the emergency is unclear.
In a post on Instagram, the official Cabrillo Boys Soccer account announced the student's death, saying it was "the hardest post we have ever had to make."
"Forever and always we will hold Brian in our hearts," the post reads.
The team invited people, including soccer program alumni, to a vigil Saturday morning at 9 a.m. According to the post, people can meet by the "C" statue in the roundabout on Willard Street west of Santa Fe Avenue. The group will then walk to the soccer field to leave flowers and candles.
LBUSD officials said they were "heartbroken" to share the news of the student's death, adding that their "thoughts are with the student's family, and the entire community."
"Out of respect for the family's privacy, no further details will be shared," the district added.
Counseling services will be available for students when classes resume on Tuesday, following the long weekend for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
