Bicyclist dies after being hit by a car earlier this month
This is the 47th traffic fatality reported by the LBPD this year, up from 40 last year, data shows.
Police say theyβre investigating the death of a bicyclist who was hit by a car on Fourth Street near Bonita Avenue on Oct. 6.
Long Beach resident Raul Augustin Gallopa, 35, was riding eastbound on Fourth Street around 7:53 p.m. that day when he attempted to make a northbound turn onto Bonito Avenue, according to Long Beach police. That's when he was hit by a 2021 BMW 330i, which was traveling eastbound on Fourth Street at a high rate of speed, police added.
The driver of the BMW, identified as Ahkeyajahnique Owens, 24, of Long Beach, remained at the scene and was arrested for reckless driving, police said.
After LBPD officers and bystanders gave aid to Gallopa, Long Beach Fire Department paramedics took him to a local hospital in critical condition, according to authorities. He died of his injuries on Oct. 20, police said, adding that the department was not notified of the death until Oct. 24.
