Police originally thought the man may have killed himself but later determined that his gunshot wound was not self-inflicted.

72-year-old man was killed, did not shoot himself, police say

A 72-year-old man who was thought to have fatally shot himself last week at his home in East Long Beach was actually killed by someone, according to police.

Officers were called to the 4700 block of Greenmeadow Road just before 8:30 p.m. after the man was found shot to death in the home, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

At first, authorities thought the man killed himself because the gunshot wound to his upper body appeared self-inflicted, police said.

But homicide detectives and personnel from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office later determined the wound could not have been self-inflicted and that someone had shot the man, according to the LBPD.

It's unclear who shot the man or why. Police say they are investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting and working to identity anyone involved in the slaying.

The 72-year-old's identity, meanwhile, has not been released as the Los Angeles Medical Examiner's office works to notify his relatives.

Police ask anyone with more information to contact detectives at 562-570-7244.
