5 dead in plane crash on Catalina Island, LASD says
The plane, a twin-engine Beechcraft 95, crashed shortly after departing from the Catalina Island Airport around 8 p.m. according to federal aviation officials.
Five people died Tuesday night when the plane they were on crashed near the Catalina Island Airport, authorities said.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane, a twin-engine Beechcraft 95 crashed shortly after departing from the Catalina Island Airport around 8 p.m.
The crash prompted a phone aboard the plane to send an S.O.S emergency, alerting the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to receive a crash location with G.P.S. coordinates, according to authorities.
Authorities responded to the coordinates, about a mile west of the airport, and found the crash site, according authorities. The five people aboard the plane died at the scene, they added.
Their identities were not immediately released.
It’s unclear what caused the plane to crash, though the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are currently investigating.
