Police say they've arrested two people they believe played a role in a shooting at a bar in Long Beach earlier this month that left one person dead.

Malcolm Gibson, 42, of Bellflower and Michelle Youngblood, 43, of Long Beach were taken into custody this week in connection with the deadly shooting on July 8 in the 4900 block of Long Beach Boulevard. Their alleged co-conspirator, Arthur Rainey III, 38, of Los Angeles was killed during the crime, police said.

Rainey, Gibson and Youngblood arrived at the bar sometime around 9 p.m. with the intention of assaulting a bar patron who Gibson and Youngblood had robbed 10 days earlier, according to Long Beach Police.

Rainey and Gibson entered the bar and began shooting at the bar patron, who fired back, striking the 38-year-old Los Angeles resident in the upper body, authorities said.

Gibson left the bar and drove away with Youngblood before police arrived, authorities said.

The bar patron, meanwhile, was struck in the lower body and taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said.

Fernando Haro has been on strike from the Long Beach Post since March 22, yet he continues to cover Long Beach unpaid. Thank him for his work.

Gibson was arrested Thursday on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, and robbery, police said.

Youngblood, according to police, was taken into custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder and robbery. They are both being held without bail, police added.

It's still not clear why Rainey, Gibson and Youngblood were targeting the bar patron and authorities said they are still investigating.

Detectives will present the case against Gibson and Youngblood to the Los Angeles District Attorney's office for filing consideration, police said.
