Police say they cited 14 people during a DUI checkpoint in Bixby Knolls Thursday night.
The DUI checkpoint, which Long Beach police say was aimed at "promoting public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road," was held at the intersection of Cherry Avenue and 45th Street between 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Out of 623 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, 172 were screened, according to the Long Beach Police Department. Fourteen people were cited during the checkpoint, 11 of which were for driving with a suspended license or driving without a license, police said.
Two people were cited for speeding while another was cited for having an open container, police said. They did not specify whether the container contained alcohol or drugs.
DUI checkpoint locations are usually determined based on the area having a history of crashes involving impaired drivers, police said.
Funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to the LBPD.
