A woman was killed and five others were injured in a crash near Poly High School early Friday morning, the Long Beach Police Department said.

Police say 53-year-old Long Beach resident Maria Concepcion Martinez was riding westbound on Pacific Coast Highway in a Toyota Scion shortly after midnight with four other people.

As their car crossed the Atlantic Avenue intersection, a 24-year-old Los Angeles woman driving a Mazda 6 northbound broadsided them, authorities said.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene where they found Martinez trapped inside the Scion, according to police. She died at the scene, they added.

Three other passengers inside the Scion and its driver were taken to local hospitals for their injuries, police said.

Two of the passengers were in stable condition while another suffered critical injuries, police said. Police did not specify what kind of injuries the driver of the Scion suffered in the crash.

The driver of the Mazda, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said. She was then taken to a hospital for treatment, authorities said.

It’s unclear who had the right of way at the intersection, police said.

Detectives are currently investigating the cause of the crash, though they believe speed and driving under the influence were factors, according to authorities.

Police, however, did not say who they believed may have been speeding or under the influence.
