Long Beach police say they arrested one person and cited five others at a DUI checkpoint in North Long Beach Friday night.

The checkpoint was set up at the intersection of Artesia Boulevard and Cherry Avenue between 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., according to the LBPD.

Out of the 249 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, 157 were screened, according to the Long Beach Police Department. One person was arrested for driving under the influence and five drivers were cited for operating a vehicle without a license, police said.

DUI checkpoint locations are usually determined based on the area having a history of crashes involving impaired drivers, police added. Friday night's checkpoint was designed to "promote public safety, increase awareness of the dangers associated with drinking and driving, and deter impaired and unlicensed/suspended drivers," according to an LBPD statement.

Funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to the LBPD.
