Police say they arrested one person and cited six others at a DUI checkpoint in East Long Beach Thursday night.

The checkpoint, which Long Beach police say was aimed at "promoting public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road," was held at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Channel Drive between 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Out of 1,031 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, 367 were screened, according to the Long Beach Police Department. One person was arrested for driving under the influence, five drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed or with a suspended or revoked license and one driver was cited for a traffic violation, police said.

DUI checkpoint locations are usually determined based on the area having a history of crashes involving impaired drivers, police said. There were two recent traffic fatalities near the site of the checkpoint, in April and May, though police said impaired driving didn't seem to factor into either incident.

Funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to the LBPD.
