Have you ever tried to Google “live music in Long Beach”? Go ahead, I’ll wait.

The top results didn’t include Vine, Supply and Demand or Alex’s Bar, did they? I don’t know how Google’s search engine works, but I do know the best places in town to find live bands and DJs almost any night of the week — and often for free.

My first year living in Long Beach is peppered with memories of dancing myself into exhaustion at the city’s longest-running DJ night, The Good Foot, and bopping around to a revolving door of surf-rock, psych and punk bands that would come through 4th Street Vine (now called Vine).

Then a few years later I found myself at The Hawk or The Grasshopper late into many summer nights, cutting proverbial rugs to anything from cumbia to city pop before I’d end up behind the turntables myself to start my own post-punk dance night.

Since, I’ve spent so much time, uh, in local bars, I’m willing to wager that my suggestions will trump Google’s any day.

Kat Schuster was laid off from the Long Beach Post on March 22, yet she still authors Clocked Out and serves as editor of the Watchdog without pay. Thank her for her work.
