What's good in the LBC: All-Star sumo wrestling, Stroll & Savor, moonlight mash and more
Whether it's a full moon bike ride, some tasty bites or an all-star competition, Long Beach has it all. Here's our weekly recap of events happening in and around Long Beach.
It’s finally, officially, summer. Well, it will be this Thursday. As temperatures rise, kids are freed from the classroom and the urge to soak up the sun is once again upon us, we’ve got some activities to fill your week.
Here are some events to start with:
Stroll & Savor (Wednesday and Thursday, June 19, 20)
Belmont Shore Business Association has put together another stroll and savor event where people can taste bites from various 2nd Street businesses. Six live performances will also take place between the two-day event. Tickets for food samples can be purchased online or in front of the 2nd Street Chase Bank. The event will start at 4:30 p.m. and a sheet of 12 tickets is priced at $15. Newly opened Holey Grail Donuts, The Win-Dow, Colossus, Domenico’s and more are participating. Moonlight Mash (Friday, June 21)
Moonlight Mash Long Beach, which organizes bike rides every full moon, will have a Friday Night Lights-themed ride this Friday where people can represent their alma maters. Interested riders can meet at Pedal Movement at 7:30 p.m. and be ready to ride around 8 p.m. Bike rentals are available. Following upcoming dates and find out more information here.
All-Star Sumo Competition (Saturday, June 22)
Cal State Long Beach’s Walter Pyramid will host the All-Star Sumo Competition which brings together the world’s best sumo wrestlers. The competition will have two dates, one in Long Beach on Thursday at 5 p.m. and one the following week in San Francisco. The competition will have no weight classes and 28 back-to-back rounds. Tickets range from $40 to $120.

More events happening:
Wednesday
- Twelfth House Tea Sanctuary is hosting a life figure drawing event Wednesday from 7 to 10 p.m. Bring whatever supplies you think you may need, tea and light snacks will be provided. Follow Twelfth House to find out about more events and reserve a spot.
Thursday
- Mahj Club Mixer: Do you love playing mahjong? Mahj Club is hosting mixer at Marlena Thursday at 9 a.m. where mahjong players can get together to learn winning tips, strategies, and of course, play. Tickets (priced at $50) include a specialty coffee and a French pastry. The game will be set and ready to play.
- The Elemental Shop will have a movie night showing Practical Magic Thursday at 6 p.m. Individual palm and tarot card readings will take place before the movie, tickets are priced at $25.25 before fees.
Friday
- Shakespeare by the Sea will have two weekends of performances in Long Beach. The first will be Friday night (with a Thursday night preview) of “Cardenio” at 8 p.m. at the Bandshell at Recreation Park. There will also be a performance on Saturday. Shakespeare by the Sea is a non-profit organization, performances are ticketless and free. Attendees can bring a blanket and have a picnic on the grass or sit on the benches at the band shell.
Plantiitas on Fourth Street is having a comedy night this Friday at 7 p.m. The lineup will include Jamario McClain, John Liu, Westside, Wendy (Jean) Wilkins
and Ryan Gingery. Tickets are priced at $15 for presale or $20 on the day.
Saturday
- Join the Watchdog crew this Saturday at Birdies N’ Brews from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. We’ll have a Closest to the Hole Virtual Golf Tournament for a fun-filled night. More details here. Come on by!
- From June 22 through June 29, artists will be painting murals around the city for the return of the Long Beach Walls & Art Renzei Festival. The festival, which is free, includes art talks, bike tours and more. Find the details here.
All summer long
- Make Noise Today is a student art exhibit highlighting literary, performance, and visual art work from 70 Asian American students. See the exhibit at the Billie Jean King Main Library through August 31.
