These city services will be closed for Juneteenth in Long Beach
Many of Long Beach's services will be interrupted Wednesday as city employees get the day off in observance of the Juneteenth federal holiday.
Several city departments and services will be closed Wednesday in Long Beach as the city observes the Juneteenth federal holiday.
Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday in 2021 with the June 19 day being signed into law as a holiday by President Joe Biden. The holiday celebrates the June 19, 1865 freeing of 250,000 enslaved people in Texas—a full two-and-a-half years after slavery was outlawed in the United States by the Emancipation Proclamation (click here to see a rundown on Juneteenth celebrations in Long Beach).
Services like street sweeping and parking enforcement will not happen Wednesday, according to an announcement from the city. All city libraries, City Hall, the towing operations and storage facilities and city-operated pools will all be closed Wednesday.

But some city services will continue despite the holiday, including refuse and recycling pickup, which will be collected as normally scheduled.
Fire stations, lifeguards, the airport and the Downtown police station front desk will all be open as will emergency dispatch for utility issues. All city parks will remain open, though the El Dorado Nature Center will be closed.
