Schedule released for resurrected Moonlight Movies on the Beach
"The Princess Bride," "The Meg," and "Coco" are among the nine-movie series.
After staring down an uncertain future earlier this month, the popular Moonlight Movies on the Beach series is back and the lineup of movies has been announced.
Most of the nine-movie summer series, which includes a mix of recent and classic (well, classic to me, a millennial) films, will take place at Granada Beach on Tuesdays, but two showings will be held at Long Beach City College campuses. Let’s see what we have:
- “Kung Fu Panda 4” – Tuesday, June 25 (Granada Beach)
- “The Meg” (it’s no “Jaws,” but glad to see a shark flick on the list) – Tuesday, July 9 (Granada Beach)
- “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” – Thursday, July 11 (LBCC - Liberal Arts Campus)
- “The Princess Bride” – Tuesday, July 16 (Granada Beach)
- “The Sandlot” – Tuesday, July 23 (Granada Beach)
- “The Breakfast Club” – Tuesday, Aug. 6 (Granada Beach)
- “Mamma Mia!” – Tuesday, Aug. 13 (Granada Beach)
- “A League of Their Own” – Tuesday, Aug. 20 (Granada Beach)
- “Coco” – Thursday, Aug. 22 (LBCC - Pacific Coast Campus)
All events are free, with food trucks and other vendors onsite (not free), and the inflatable silver screen lights up when the sun sets.

“Moonlight Movies on the Beach has been a part of the Long Beach community for years, offering great multi generational entertainment for all residents,” Mayor Rex Richardson said in a statement Friday. “We look forward to seeing families enjoying the lineup this summer.”
After 25 years of providing an oceanfront cinema experience, the series almost did not take place this year. On June 1, organizers took to social media to break the sad news: the beloved event was canceled due to financial challenges, including rising costs and a lack of sponsorships. News quickly spread to Richardson, who immediately reached out to organizers to offer city support.
Two days later, the series was back on.
Granada Beach is located at 5100 E. Ocean Blvd.; LBCC’s Liberal Arts Campus is located at 4901 E. Carson St.; LBCC’s Pacific Coast Campus is located at 1305 E. Pacific Coast Hwy.

Cyclist killed in crash near CSULB, police say

Long Beach police say they’re investigating a crash Friday morning near Cal State Long Beach that left a cyclist dead. The cyclist, according to police, was riding eastbound in the number three lane of Seventh Street, east of Margo Avenue, around 5:05 a.m. when the driver of a car hit him from behind.
