Police shoot, wound woman they say pointed gun at them near St. Mary
The woman surrendered after a four-hour long SWAT standoff and is in stable condition, according to police.
A woman was shot and wounded by Long Beach police Sunday night after she allegedly pointed a gun at officers in the area of Long Beach Boulevard and 10th Street.
Police said in a statement that officers were called around 8:55 p.m. to the 1000 block of Long Beach Boulevard after multiple people reported that a woman was armed with a gun in the area.
Officers quickly arrived and found the woman holding the gun, police said.
The woman went inside her home, but at some point, she opened the door and pointed the gun toward the officers, police said. That’s when at least one officer opened fire at her.
The gunfire struck the woman in the upper body and she barricaded herself inside her home while LBPD activated its SWAT team, authorities said
SWAT personnel tried to de-escalate the situation but the woman refused to leave her home, police said.
After four hours of failing to get her out of the home, SWAT personnel deployed gas and she surrendered herself into police custody, according to authorities.
The woman was then taken to a local hospital for treatment to her wound, police said, adding that she is in stable condition and expected to be booked later. Police did not release her identity or say what she is expected be booked on suspicion of.
No officers were injured during the incident, and a replica firearm was seized at the scene, they said.
As procedure when an officer fires their weapon, the LBPD and the Los Angeles District Attorneys office will launch their own investigations into the shooting to see if the actions taken by officers during the incident followed the department’s policies.
Officers were equipped with body-cameras at the time of the shooting and the footage will be available to the public “as soon as possible,” police said.
